The book that i was assigned for the lit circles is called "Holler If You Hear Me". This book is about Mr. Mitchie a teacher who works at an inner city school in chicago. I can relate to what i have read so far in this book because i live in philadelphia and went to an inner city grade which was similiar in some ways to the school that Mr. Mitchie taught at. In my school the poluation of students was very diverse kinda like the poulation in Mr Mitchie's school. So far i have enjoyed reading this book and it is one that has been able to keep my attention and make me not want to stop reading. This is one of the first books i have ever read that i can say that about which i really like. I really liked how throughout the book he would decribe the events that were going on in the classroom and who was involved in those events then later go on into greater detail about one of the charecters involved in that event. This was something i really liked because after reading the chapter you want to know more about the charecters and him being able to put a whole section in each chapter about one of the students past and how they have grown makes it easier to relate to each charecter and what they have gone through. The one thing that stuck out to me the most was the young kid named tavares. He was only twelve years old and was already one of the top members of a local gang. The gang members and people on the streets would call him lil money. He was a high member of the gang who would sell drugs, get other members to do crimes for him like rob and steal and even was shot before. This surprised me because he was only twelve years old and i feel like i could never picture a twelve year old doing all those things. Tavares eventually grew out of the gang life and grew as a person he was able to get his priorities straight and know that selling drugs and being in a gang is not the right choice and wanted to graduate from highschool and become something. This was something that surprised me as well because after reading that tavares was so high up in the gang life at 12 i thought that he would definatley be a gang member for life and seeing that he changed his life around was amazing. Seeing that throughout these chapters Mr. Mitchie has had such an impact on so many students lives is great and i cant wait to keep reading the rest of the book.
